The University of Papua New Guinea’s dentistry division is launching a national project to study oral submucous fibrosis and reduce cancer risks tied to betel quid chewing. With no prior national cancer registry, this research marks an important step toward understanding and addressing the issue across the country.
Dentists from all 22 provinces now attend annual workshops led by local and Australian experts. They learn simple visual checks to spot early warning signs inside the mouth, allowing provincial clinics to report cases quickly and start treatment sooner.
